Beyond SEO: Googlebot Optimization


You know all about search engine optimization — the importance of a well-structured site, relevant keywords, appropriate tagging, technical standards, and lots and lots of content. But chances are you don’t think a lot about Googlebot optimization.
Googlebot optimization isn’t the same thing as search engine optimization, because it goes a level deeper. Search engine optimization is focused more upon the process of optimizing for user’s queries. Googlebot optimization is focused upon how Google’s crawler accesses your site.
There’s a lot of overlap, of course. However, I want to make this important distinction, because there are foundational ways in which it can affect your site. A site’s crawlability is the important first step to ensuring its searchability.

What is Googlebot?

Googlebot is Google’s search bot that crawls the web and creates an index. It’s also known as a spider. The bot crawls every page it’s allowed access to, and adds it to the index where it can be accessed and returned by users’ search queries.

The whole idea of how Googlebot crawls your site is crucial to understanding Googlebot optimization. Here are the basics:
  1. Googlebot spends more time crawling sites with significant pagerank. The amount of time that Googlebot gives to your site is called “crawl budget.” The greater a page’s authority, the more crawl budget it receives.
  2. Googlebot is always crawling your site. Google’s Googlebot article says this: “Googlebot shouldn’t access your site more than once every few seconds on average.” In other words, your site is always being crawled, provided your site is accurately accepting crawlers. There’s a lot of discussion in the SEO world about “crawl rate” and how to get Google to recrawl your site for optimal ranking. There is a terminology misunderstanding here, because Google’s “crawl rate” refers to the speed of Googlebot’s requests, not the recurrence of its site crawl. You can alter the crawl rate within Webmaster Tools (gear icon → Site Settings → Crawl rate). Googlebot consistently crawls your site, and the more freshness, backlinks, social mentions, etc., the more likely it is that your site will appear in search results. It’s important to note that Googlebot does not crawl every page on your site all the time. This is a good place to point out the importance of consistent content marketing — fresh, consistent content always gains the crawler’s attention, and improves the likelihood of top ranked pages.
  3. Googlebot first accesses a site’s robots.txt to find out the rules for crawling the site. Any pages that are disallowed will not be crawled or indexed.
  4. Googlebot uses the sitemap.xml to discover any and all areas of the site to be crawled and indexed. Because of the variation in how sites are built and organized, the crawler may not automatically crawl every page or section. Dynamic content, low-ranked pages, or vast content archives with little internal linking could benefit from an accurately-constructed Sitemap. Sitemaps are also beneficial for advising Google about the metadata behind categories like video, images, mobile, and news.

Six Principles for a Googlebot Optimized Site

Since Googlebot optimization comes a step before search engine optimization, it’s important that your site be as easily and accurately indexed as possible. I’m going to explain how to do this.

1. Don’t get too fancy.

My advice, “don’t get too fancy” is for this reason. Googlebot doesn’t crawl JavaScript, frames, DHTML, Flash, and Ajax content as well as good ol’ HTML.
Google hasn’t been forthcoming on how well or how much Googlebot parses JavaScript and Ajax. Since the jury is out — and opinions run the gamut — you’re probably best off not consigning most of your important site elements and/or content into Ajax/JavaScript.
I realize that Matt Cutts told us that we can open up Javascript to the crawler. But some evidence and Google Webmaster Guidelines still proffer this bit of advice:
If fancy features such as JavaScript, cookies, session IDs, frames, DHTML, or Flash keep you from seeing all of your site in a text browser, then search engine spiders may have trouble crawling your site.
I side with skepticism on the use of JavaScript. Conjecture what you wish, but basically, don’t get too fancy.

2. Do the right thing with your robots.txt.

Have you ever really thought about why you need a robots.txt? It’s standard best practice for SEO, but why?
One reason why a robots.txt is essential is because it serves as a directive to the all-important Googlebot. Googlebot will spend its crawl budget on any pages on your site. You need to tell the Googlebot where it should and shouldn’t expend crawl budget. If there are any pages or silos of your site that should not be crawled, please modify your robots.txt accordingly.
The less Googlebot is spending time on unnecessary sections of your site, the more it can crawl and return the more important sections of your site.
As a friendly bit of advice, please don’t block pages or sections of your site that should not be blocked. The Googlebot’s default mode is to crawl and index everything. The whole point of robots.txt is to tell Googlebot where it shouldn’t go. Let the crawler loose on whatever you want to be part of Google’s index.

3. Create fresh content.

Content that is crawled more frequently is more likely to gain more traffic. Although pagerank is probably the determinative factor in crawl frequency, it’s likely that the pagerank becomes less important when compared with freshness factor of similarly ranked pages.
It’s especially crucial for Googlebot optimization to get your low ranked pages crawled as often as possible. As AJ Kohn wrote, “You win if you get your low PageRank pages crawled more frequently than the competition.”

4. Optimize infinite scrolling pages.

If you utilize an infinite scrolling page, then you are not necessarily ruining your chance at Googlebot optimization. However, you need to ensure that your infinite scrolling pages comply with the stipulations provided by Google and explained in my article on the subject.

5. Use internal linking

Internal linking is, in essence, a map for Googlebot to follow as it crawls your site. The more integrated and tight-knit your internal linking structure, the better Googlebot will crawl your site.
An accurate way to analyze your internal linking structure is to go to Google Webmaster Tools → Search Traffic → Internal Links. If the pages at the top of the list are strong content pages that you want to be returned in the SERPs, then you’re doing well. These top-linked pages should be your site’s most important pages:

6. Create a sitemap.xml

Your sitemap is one of the clearest messages to the Googlebot about how to access your site. Basically, a Sitemap does exactly what the name suggests — serves as a map to your site for the Googlebot to follow. Not every site can be crawled easily. Complicating factors may, for lack of a better word, “confuse” Googlebot or get it sidetracked as it crawls your site.
Sitemaps provide a necessary corrective to these missteps, and ensures that all the areas of your site that need to be crawled will be crawled.

Analyzing Googlebot’s Performance on Your Site

The great thing about Googlebot optimization is that you don’t have to play guesswork to see how your site is performing with the crawler. Google Webmaster Tools provides helpful information on the main features.
I want to advise you that this is a limited set of data, but it will alert you to any major problems or trends with your site’s crawl performance:
Log in to Webmaster Tools, and go to “Crawl” to check these diagnostics.

Crawl Errors

You can find out if your site is experiencing any problems with crawl status. As Googlebot routinely crawls the web, your site will either subject itself to crawling with no issues, or it will throw up some red flags, such as pages that the bot expected to be there based on the last index. Checking out crawl errors is your first step for Googlebot optimization.
Some sites have crawl errors, but the errors are so few or insignificant that they don’t automatically affect traffic or ranking. Over time however, such errors are usually correlated with traffic decline. Here is an example of a site that is experiencing errors:

Crawl Stats

Google tells you how many pages and kbs the bot analyzes per day. A proactive content marketing campaign that regularly pushes fresh content will provide a positive upward momentum for these stats.

Fetch as Google

The “Fetch as Google” feature allows you to look at your site or individual pages the way that Google would.

If you want to check and see if your robots.txt is working, then “Blocked URLs” will tell you what you need to know.

Use the sitemap feature if you want to add a sitemap, test a sitemap, or discover what kind of content is being indexed in your sitemap.

URL Parameters

Depending on the amount of duplicate content caused by dynamic URLs, you may have some issues on the URL parameter indices. The URL Parameters section allows you to configure the way that Google crawls and indexes your site with URL parameters. By default, all pages are crawled according to the way that Googlebot decides:

10 Ways to Increase Your Site Crawl Rate

Update Your Content Often (and ping Google once you do)

An obvious one, so not much to describe here; in a word, try to add new unique content as often as you can afford and do it regularly (3 times a week can be the best solution if you can’t update your site daily and are looking for the optimal update rate).

Check Your Server

Make sure your server works correctly: mind the uptime and Google Webmaster tools reports of the unreached pages. Two tools I can recommend here are Pingdom and Mon.itor.us.

Pay Attention To Load Time

Mind your page load time: note that the crawl works on a budget – if it spends too much time crawling your huge images or PDFs, there will be no time left to visit your other pages.

Check Links

Check the site internal link structure: make sure there is no duplicate content returned via different URLs: again, the more time the crawler spends figuring your duplicate content, the fewer useful and unique pages it will manage to visit.

Build More Links

Get more back links from regularly crawled sites.

Add a Sitemap

Though it’s up for adebate whether the sitemap can help with crawling and indexing issues, many webmasters report they have seen increased crawl rate after adding it.

Make It Easy

Make sure your server returns the correct header response. Does it handle your error pages properly? Don’t make the bot figure out what has happened: explain it clearly.

Check Meta and Title Tags

Make sure you have unique title and meta tags for each of your pages.

Test, Test, Test

Monitor Google crawl rate for your site and see what works and what not:

7 Ways to Improve the Site-wide Crawl Frequency of Your Site


You might always have wanted Google to index your new blog posts the second they’re live, but it doesn’t simply happen. While expecting googlebot to permanently reside on your site is a bit unrealistic in nature, you can still make use of various ethical ways that’d make googlebot come back to your site often, and not only that, also get the new pages on your site indexed quickly, even if you’re not the New York Times or Mashable.
So, without further adieu, here are some ways you can improve the site-wide frequency of crawling of your site:

1. Share Your New Contents on Google+

2. Maintain A Regular Posting Frequency

Studies suggest that googlebot actually crawls sites based on their activity trends. So, for a website that gets updated 100 times a day, googlebot will make sure to crawl that more often than a site that gets updated only once per day or once per week.
Maybe, Google’s advanced machine-learning mechanisms play some role here, and they actually learn the behaviours of websites and then act on them (crawl them) based on that.
I’ve actually tested this theory on many of my sites, multiple times in the past. Even small changes like switching from a weekly to a bi-weekly posting schedule resulted in increased crawl rates.

3. Make Your Site More ‘Crawlable’

What I mean by this, is fix crawl errors, make your website faster, optimize various performance areas of your site, and everything else that you can possibly think of to make the crawling ‘job’ easier for search engine spiders.
Noticing tons of server and DNS errors in Google Webmaster Tools? Now might be a good time to switch servers. On the other hand, if you see a bunch of 404 errors, you should focus on actually fixing them.
The main thing is to encourage googlebot to crawl your site more often.

4. Build ‘High Quality’ Links to Your Site

Matt Cutts is actually right about high quality backlinks improving the crawl rate and thus the indexation speed of your site. He said many times in his webmaster help videos that Google basically controls the frequency of crawling web pages according to their PageRank.
So, as low quality but high PageRank links have the chance to get your site penalized, you should aim for at least decent if not high quality links to influence the crawling frequency of your site.

5. Try to Get Social Shares

While there’s no evidence that social shares directly influence search rankings, according to my personal experience they do help new contents of a site get indexed very quickly.
Sites like Facebook and Twitter don’t allow spiders to crawl all of their pages containing fresh content. For example, Facebook doesn’t allow bots to crawl anything that’s not publicly available (and that makes sense). Similarly, Twitter doesn’t allow bots to crawl their real-time search results and any kind of search results in truth. You can verify this by checking their robots.txt files.
Even then, crawlers such as googlebot and bingbot are able to crawl people’s profiles on these social networks and access publicly available information. So, they’re still able to find a link you’ve recently shared on your Twitter account, or shared publicly on your Facebook account. So, getting a decent amount of social shares for your contents do help to get crawled and indexed faster.
Social bookmarking sites such as Reddit, Digg, and StumbleUpon also help in the process. In fact, Reddit in particular, is a huge source of fresh content that people find interesting to the search engines, especially because it’s easy to crawl, thanks to its structure and open nature.

6. Unlinked Mentions & Co-citations Help, Too…

People tend to care about links so much that they almost ignore unlinked brand mentions and co-citations. The reality is that they’re signals of a real brand.
A real brand has unlinked brand mentions alongside linked ones. You might have noticed that I have mentioned quite a few social sites in this post but I didn’t link to them, because people are already familiar with them and I don’t have to remind them the URLs of those sites.
A real brand also has decent co-citations, i.e. textual contents placed around the links to them. So, say TechTage has been doing a good job posting SEO related articles and guides. So, it’ll obviously have links to the homepage, as well as internal pages, and those links will be surrounded by blocks of textual contents about SEO.
What that does is, prove to Google TechTage’s topical authority when it comes to SEO. This isn’t confirmed, but it’s known that Google has been working on ways to determine and utilize the topical authorities of sites to provide better search results. Again, there’s not evidence to this at the moment and it’s based on my experience.

7. Post Unique Content

Lastly, you have to post unique content. Before you shout at me saying, “you’re just a younger version of the stupid Matt Cutts”, let me explain the relation between unique content and a site’s crawl rate.
What I meant by unique content is a piece of content not scraped off other sites or duplicated from another site. Google has got really smart in the last few years in detecting duplicate and scraped content, so I wouldn’t suggest you to post even manually re-written content.
Now, why is that bad for your site’s crawl rate? Well, that’s because over time, Google will identify your site as a copy-paster, that doesn’t add something new to the table. Then they’ll slowly reduce the crawl frequency and if they notice no improvements on your side, they’ll stop crawling it altogether. This is opposite to what happened at the time of the Caffeine update. Now, even for popular search terms, the amount of total search results (displayed by Google) has been reduced by as much as 20-50%.
So, they’ve definitely found it useless to index sites that just publish re-hashed content. On the other hand, posting unique content not found anywhere else on the internet will make Google more interested in your site, and subsequently, the crawl rates will improve as well.

6. Block access to unwanted page via Robots.txt
There is no point letting search engine bots crawling useless pages like admin pages, back-end folders as we don’t index them in Google and so there is no point letting them crawl such part of site.

Now You can also monitor and optimize Google Crawl rate using Google Webmaster Tools. Just go to the crawl stats there and analyze. You can manually set your Google crawl rate and increase it to faster as given below. Though I would suggest use it with caution and use it only when you are actually facing issues with bots not crawling your site effectively.

8. Use Ping services:
Pinging is a great way to show your site presence and let bots know when your site content is updated. There are many manual ping services like Pingomatic and in WordPress you can manually add more ping services to ping many search engine bots. You can find such a list at WordPress ping list post.
9. Interlink your blog pages like a pro:
Interlinking not only helps you to pass link juice but also help search engine bots to crawl deep pages of your site. When you write a new post, go back to related old posts and add a link to your new post there.
This will no directly help in increasing Google crawl rate but will help bots to effectively crawl deep pages on your site.

10. Don’t forget to Optimize Images
Crawlers are unable to read images directly.  If you use images, be sure to use alt tags to provide a description that search engines can index.  Images are included in search results but only if they are properly optimized. This will help bots to find all your images, and you can expect a decent amount of traffic from search engine bots if you have taken care of image alt tag properly.
Well, these are few tips that I can think of which will help you to increase site crawl rate and get better indexing in Google or other search engines. The last tip which I would like to add here is, add your sitemap link in the footer of your site.
This will help bots to find your sitemap page quickly, and they can crawl and index deep pages of your site from the sitemap.

10 SEO Techniques




If you’re a startup entrepreneur, chances are good that search engine optimization (SEO) is the last thing on your mind. After all, why should you worry about things like keyword phrases and backlinks when there are a hundred other items on your “to do” list, all clamoring for your attention?

Don’t force it through excessive inclusions, but do take advantage of the SEO value these positions hold to inform the search engines about the subject of your web content.

Technique #2 – Implement Branding Efforts

However, while it’s important to identify and target SEO keywords for use in your startup marketing plan, it’s also vital that you begin the branding process as early as possible in your company’s tenure. There’s no arguing with the fact that Google loves brands. Considering that the search engine must rely on quantifiable metrics (rather than subjective assessments) in order to evaluate website quality for display in the natural search results, branded elements remain one reliable bellwether that can be used to indicate viewer valuation.
To get started capturing these benefits for your startup’s website, decide on a set logo, color scheme, tagline, and promotional phrasing as early as possible, and use these elements consistently across your web presence.  Consider working with a graphic designer or marketing consultant if you don’t feel capable of coming up with a cohesive brand on your own.

Technique #3 – Focus on Content Creation

Running a company blog on which you post product updates, industry news reactions, or other personal interest pieces is a vital part of SEO for two reasons.
First, publishing content to your site regularly increases the number of different keywords present on your site. By improving keyword exposure, you may find yourself earning free SEO traffic via natural search phrases you never even targeted on your site!
Second, filling your site with valuable content is a great way to build up the relationships you share with your prospects and customers. To do this effectively, identify the people you’d like to connect with based on their numbers of followers and their general authority within your industry, and then let your relationships with them build up naturally. Sharing their content or offering to help them in some way will go a long way towards ensuring the success of your eventual share request.

Another foundation to web success that all startups should consider is the ability to measure and test different metrics. For example, if you’ve recently added a new sign-up form to your startup’s website, you’ll want to be sure it’s as effective as possible, and you can’t know that if you aren’t measuring the results you achieve through A/B or multivariate split testing.

Technique #8 – Invest in Link Building Campaigns

While optimizing your website for your chosen SEO and branded keyword phrases is important, it’s only half of the optimization battle. The second primary SEO aim you’ll want to pay attention to is link building, as in the process of getting other websites to point links to your content.
